Ian McDowell
Ian combines old techniques with modern ingenuity to create beautiful dishes for everyday use. Working primarily with porcelain and stoneware clays, he utilizes locally-harvested, wild-crafted ceramic materials along with iron and other metal oxides to form unique glazes. He fires in small batches in a downdraft propane kiln that he designed as well as a small 120 volt electric kiln. After the materials are obtained and prepared, the process spans many weeks from when the clay is initially formed to when it has finally cooled down from the final firing. Every step is done by Ian at his home just east of Austin, Texas.
